It looks like a sphinx. The lion is truly represented here as the king of the jungle. At first glance this might look similar to the classic lion sculptures that have been enjoyed for eons by cultures around the world.

But when you look closer, you will notice the hindquarters are twisted to one side, while the fore-end is curved in the opposite direction, giving an S-Curve to the spine. The left front paw is curled sideways partially covering the right paw, and I extended the platform beyond the length of the cat (imaging this lion to be on flat ground). In essence using the base more as a frame.

For over twenty years, I’ve casually considered sculpting a laying down lion and during my months of hibernation with 2020 lockdowns, the inspiration arrived for “Classic with a Twist”.
